Middle Eastern desserts are not all about Baklava

Finishing off a meal with tea or coffee and sweets is just as much a part of our Middle Eastern traditions as the main meal.

At Rumi, we offer a selection of great Lebanese coffee, teas and herbal tisanes for you to finish your meal, but If you have a sweet tooth, Rumi serves up some of the best desserts in Brunswick. Here’s just a snapshot of some of our customer’s favourites:

1. Chocolate Muhallabiyeh Pudding with barberries, pomegranate molasses

A popular dessert throughout the Middle East is Muhallabiyah. This thickened milk pudding is a healthy, creamy, refreshing, dessert or snack made by the grandmother in every Lebanese household. It really is a simple recipe, milk, sugar, corn starch or rice flour to thicken the mixture and then it's flavoured with rose water or orange blossom.

At Rumi Brunswick, we put a modern touch to this Middle Eastern dessert and flavour ours with chocolate. Who doesn't love chocolate?

2. Arak poached apricots filled with labne

These are no ordinary apricots. They are Rumi's special Arak poached apricots which are then filled with creamy labne. They are a lighter alternative if you want just a little sweet treat after dinner but don't quite have the room for a full dessert.

Arak poached apricots filled with labne are also part of the selection of sweets in our classic banquet, an ideal option for small and large group bookings.

3. Macadamia baklava ice cream sandwich

This dessert combines the best of both worlds - the crispy layers of filo pastry of the baklava, sandwiched with some macadamia ice cream in the middle. Perfect end to a meal we think 😉

4. Medjool dates filled with orange labne & pistachio

We choose medjool dates as they are larger than regular dates and have a rich caramel like taste and a soft and chewy texture. We fill them with an orange infused sweet labne and top them with crushed pistachios. The tartness of the labne contrasts well with the sweetness in the dates. They are a nice way to finish the meal alongside our great tea and coffee selection.
